A Fairy Tale by 7th Grade Me
Once upon a time, far, far away in a little country called Rakso, there lived a little boy who would never mind his parents. He was always too busy reading. Whenever his mother or father would ask him to do something, he would say, "Why should I? I should be studying!" This boy's name was Koden.
One day, Koden's mom said, "I'm going to the village to buy some food. While I'm gone, feed the pigs and muck out the stables and please don’t go into the woods!"
As soon as his mother left, he ran outside and into the woods. Joyfully, he skipped among the leaves. All of the sudden, he came to a pleasant little cottage. "I've never seen this cottage before. I wonder who lives in it?" Koden thought to himself. His mother had told him to never go up to a stranger's house, but of course, he never minded his mother. Boldly, he knocked on the door. A beautiful maiden answered it and squealed with glee, "Oh, what a handsome and strong boy! You must be worn out from you journey. Why don't you come inside and have some tea and cake?"
Koden grinned and ran into her house. She slammed the door and locked it. In horror, he watched as the beautiful maiden transformed into an atrocious witch! Cackling, she said to Koden, "Ah, you will make a strong new servant for my house?" She stared at his head, like she was reading his mind. "Aha! You know how to cook! An excellent find, wouldn't you agree, Merelda?" she spoke to the parrot in the corner.
"Bwakk! You are right! Bwakk!" Merelda answered.
The witch grinned at Koden with her revolting teeth, "That’s the only thing she knows how to say. You'd learn well from her." She chortled maliciously. Viciously, she snatched Koden's collar, yanked him down her hallway and hurled him into a dungeon with a girl his age. He could see her because of the light that came through the caged roof.
Grabbing the bars he howled at the witch, "Won't you give us anything to eat?"
"Why should I?" screeching with laughter, she locked him in the cage.
In sorrow, he turned to the girl beside him in the cage only big enough for two people to lie down. "What's your name?" she asked him
"My name is Koden Bayard. And yours?"
"I am Princess Emilia Whitebeard, only child of Jakob and Patricia Whitebeard, King and Queen of Rakso." Emilia answered.
His jaw dropped, "You're the missing princess? Everyone's looking for you! Even though those who have looked for you say you must be dead, your parents continue to look for you."
Emilia smiled, "That's good except for no one can find this cottage except for disobedient children in Rakso."
"How do you know that? And are we the only disobedient children in Rakso? Surely there are more!" Koden was puzzled.
"Merelda told me. Robella can't read animal's minds. She thinks Merelda is a stupid bird that can only say, "You are right", but Merelda has picked up on a lot of things and she told me that because I gave her some food. I felt sorry for her. Robella only feeds her every other day. And to answer your other question. No. There are forty other cages that hold 2 children each. She doesn't want us conversing and conspiring against her so she separates us. I was the newest before you!"
"So Robella is her name. Hmmm, is she a wicked witch?" Koden asked Emilia.
She gave him a look like he was crazy. "Yeah, she's a wicked witch, but you better go to sleep now because she will wake us up early in the morning to work." Emilia curled up on one of the two narrow stone slabs one foot apart that were supposed to be beds. Koden took off his jacket and laid it on her shivering shoulders. She gave him a shy grin and rolled over and went to sleep. He lay down on his own slab and he fell asleep immediately.
Koden awoke to the bars shaking. "Wake up, stupids! It's time for breakfast!" Robella screeched and continued down the hall.
"Yes, breakfast, something to eat!" Koden popped out of bed.
"Eat? Before Robella? Nope. You’re the new cook. I'll tell you what she expects. Two roasted turkeys, a crown of lamb, seventeen scrambled eggs, twenty half bagels with cream cheese, a glass of goat milk, and one gallon of orange juice." Emily explained the long list of food.
"That's masses of food!" he lowered his voice, "I have a plan to get us out of here! At home, I read a book on herbs. There is a plant called Moonlick that tastes, looks, and smells like salt, but if a wicked witch eats it, she’ll shrivel up like a snail!" He walked out of the jail and up to Robella. He cleared is minds of all thoughts of what was about to do so Robella wouldn't read his mind. He thought of food. "Robella, may I go outside and pick wild vegetables out of the forest? It will make your roasted turkeys 100 times better!"
Robella was pleased that he had asked her. "Sure! You are much better than my last cook. Well, you'd BETTER be better than my last cook."
He walked outside and picked vegetables. A little deeper in the woods grew wild onions and Moonlick. Silently, he walked back.
"Why did you go so deep in the woods?" Robella asked suspiciously.
"To get wild onions." He answered simply. Robella seemed to accept that answer and so Koden washed the vegetables and Moonlick. He then cooked a delicious meal. Carrying two trays at a time, Koden set all the food in front of Robella. She ate ravenously, gulping the eggs, lamb, and milk all at once. Koden's heart raced as she picked up both turkeys at the same time. Not to give himself away, Koden thought of his horse Gallopatrot and how much he wanted to ride him. As soon as she put the turkeys in her mouth, she began to scream. Her skin started to bubble and eighty-one curious faces peeked out of their cages. Soon, she was a puddle on the ground. The children cheered and stampeded out the door, all back to their home where their parents missed them very much. None of them ever disobeyed again. Well, almost never.
Koden and Emilia grew up, fell in love, and were married. Koden became king of Rakso and they lived happily ever after.
